Greg Bird Surgery Fears Are Back

Greg Bird has taken another — and potentially huge — step back. The Yankees are mulling next steps for Bird after the ailing first baseman experienced inflammation in his troublesome right ankle, general manager Brian Cashman said Friday.

The Yankees are hopeful a cortisone shot will help reduce the swelling, but aren’t ruling out the possibility of surgery, which would set Bird back another six to eight weeks.

In Bird’s place, the Yankees have called up first baseman Garrett Cooper, whom they acquired Thursday in a trade with the Brewers. The position has been a weak spot all season. The Yankees begin a crucial four-game series Friday night against the AL East-leading Red Sox.
