President Trump huddled with members of his legal team Thursday, a day after the announcement that former FBI Director Robert Mueller will serve as special counsel for the Justice Department’s Russia probe, according to a published report.

White House Counsel Doug McGahn and Trump’s longtime lawyer Michael Cohen advised the president and several senior aides to be cautious while the investigation is ongoing and to retain pertinent records for possible future inquiries, sources familiar with the meeting told Politico.

Trump was also briefed on how the investigation will proceed and what he should be doing to ensure he remains at a distance from the probe, which he has repeatedly labeled a “witch hunt.”

“There is no collusion between, certainly, myself and my campaign – but I can always speak for myself – and the Russians,” Trump told reporters at a White House news conference on Thursday.

Mueller was appointed to oversee the Russia investigation less than a week after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.
