Warning: A witness described how there were no staff helping and people were ferried out as others entered
The passenger was smoking the e-cigarette in toilets found just after security at the London airport.
It caused chaos during the morning rush at Stansted.
Airport bosses told MailOnline that people were not evacuated - but people outside were stopped at the doors.
But Mr Orrell and others said they were moved out of the terminal after the fire alarm went off.
The incident lasted for 15 minutes but it did delay check-in for some and longer queues at security.
A spokesman said: 'A smoke detector was briefly activated in a toilet near to the departure lounge at 5.59 this morning. Passengers were held back from entering security for 15 minutes following the alarm activation.
'We believe the smoke alarm was set off due to an individual using an e-cigarette in a toilet.
'We apologies for any inconvenience caused by the alarm but our priority will always be to take the necessary and appropriate actions to investigation any activation to ensure the safety of passengers and staff is maintained at all times .'
